Himeji Castle is one of the best architectural achievements of the early 17th century in Japan. It is also known as “Shirasagi-jo” (White Heron Castle) because of its white walls and dignified elegance.

Himeji used to be the transportation hub in western Japan. Terumasa Ikeda, assumed a position as the lord of the castle in 1600, started rebuilding the castle in 1601. It took him almost nine years to complete reconstruction and over thirty million people were spent on it.

Himeji Castle is a hill castle, standing on Mount Himeyama (45.6m). It is enclosed by the middle and outer moat, and has kept its original structure and form.

Himeji Castle is the architecture in the peak of building technique of castle in Japan, and is a masterpiece of castle construction in existence in Japan. It was put on the list of UNESCO World Cultural and Heritage Sites along with Horyuji Temple on December 11, 1993.

The main donjon of Himeji Castle contains six floors and is linked with three smaller donjons by a breezeway. The complex roof layers of the castle, “Chidorihafu” (Dormer Gables) and “Karahafu” (Chinese Gables), contrast with the white plastered earthen walls, creating a unique aura.
